What Is the Best Mid Layer for You?

What Is the Best Mid Layer for You?

A mid layer sits between your base layer and outer shell, and its primary job is widely considered to be insulation. The concept is simple: the higher the loft, the more air it traps, and the warmer it keeps you. But more loft also means more volume and weight, so depending on where and how you move, there is always a balance to strike between warmth and bulk. In a dry, resting scenario, the choice is straightforward. But if you want a mid layer you can keep wearing through active movement, warmth alone is no longer the whole story.

What to Look for in a Mid Layer for Active Use

Insulating layers like fleece and down are excellent at what they are designed to do: trap heat and keep you warm. When you're at camp, taking a break at a summit, or moving at a relaxed pace in dry and cold conditions, they are hard to beat for pure warmth. That said, both have their limitations when things get wet or sweaty. So we usually pack these insulation layers in the backpack and put them on and off as needed.

On the other hand, if your activity puts you in constantly changing temperatures, moving between sun and shade, uphill and downhill, wind and calm, but you don't want to stop every few steps to dress and undress, then you might be looking for an active insulation you can keep wearing throughout. In that case, the mid layer needs to work as part of the whole layering system, and it becomes important that it doesn't block the flow of sweat processing from your skin outward.

Insulation and Moisture Management, Together

At Finetrack, we believe in layering as a complete system. If we can minimize the need to stop and change layers while on the move, our time in the mountains becomes less stressful and safer, especially when the weather turns. To make that possible, we wanted our mid layer to do two things at once: provide warmth, and keep moisture moving outward.

Our mid layers are designed to continue that moisture journey, absorbing and spreading sweat from the base layer underneath, converting it to vapor, and releasing it outward, all while keeping you warm. The result is a mid layer you can keep on through hard effort without overheating, and that continues to insulate even as you work up a sweat.

How Finetrack's Mid Layers Move Moisture

We take three different approaches to moisture management in our mid layer lineup, each suited to different conditions and activities.

Drought® Series: Capillary Action Moisture Transport

The Drought® fabric is built around a three-layer construction that works as a single integrated system. The textured inner face draws sweat away quickly through point contact, passes it through a middle transport layer, and spreads it across the outer surface where it converts to vapor and escapes. The structure also prevents moisture from moving back toward the skin, keeping you dry and comfortable throughout sustained effort.

FINEPOLYGON® Series: Insulation That Breathes

FINEPOLYGON® is the world's first sheet-form three-dimensional insulation material, and unlike down or most synthetic fills, it doesn't absorb water. Even when wet, it maintains its loft and insulating ability. Its excellent breathability allows moisture from the base layer to pass through quickly without being retained, resulting in a mid layer that stays warm, breathable, and keeps processing moisture even in wet or high-output conditions.

Ramie Spin® Knit Shirt: High Breathability as Moisture Control

The Ramie Spin® Knit Shirt approaches moisture management differently. Instead of a technical fabric construction, it relies on exceptional breathability and a shirt-style design to regulate temperature and moisture naturally. The knit fabric offers breathability and moisture management comparable to a base layer, with the added flexibility of a shirt you can easily open or remove to manage temperature on the go. It's the mid layer for days when conditions shift constantly and you need maximum control over how you feel.

LINKVENT®: Ventilation When You Need It Most

All three series are available with Finetrack's LINKVENT® ventilation system. LINKVENT® aligns ventilation openings across the mid layer and outer shell, so a single zip motion ventilates all the way through to the base layer. When moisture is building up faster than the fabric can handle, or when a hard climb demands immediate temperature relief, LINKVENT® lets you flush warm, humid air out instantly without taking any layers off.

Finding the Right Mid Layer for You

The right mid layer depends on what you prioritize. If staying warm through hard effort without stopping to change layers matters to you, moisture management becomes just as important as warmth. That's the balance we design toward. Consider your activity, the conditions you expect, and how you want to feel on the move, then explore our lineup to find the right fit for you.
