Can we make a base layer that’s warmer than wool, without using wool?
When it comes to winter base layers, warmth is everything.
Wool, especially Merino, has long been the standard, but it struggles with moisture. It absorbs sweat slowly and takes time to dry once wet. During high-output activities like hiking uphill or breaking trail in deep snow, this can quickly lead to chill and discomfort.
At Finetrack, we’ve worked for years to solve this with our hybrid fabric Merino Spin®, which blends Merino’s warmth with the quick-drying power of polyester.
Now, with Drought Thermo, we set out to go even further, creating a base layer that surpasses Merino Spin® in both warmth and moisture control, using materials other than wool.
Warmth and Moisture Control Through Fiber and Fabric Design
To achieve both warmth and quick drying, we turned to an uncommon fiber in outdoor apparel: Cupra. Known for its moisture-regulating ability, cupra also helps retain warmth when blended with other fibers, making it ideal for winter base layers.
By combining cupra with permanently hydrophilic polyester, we created a fabric that absorbs and releases sweat efficiently without sacrificing insulation. The key was a three-dimensional knit structure that traps air for warmth, paired with a lightly brushed inner surface that enhances moisture wicking through capillary action.
As an added benefit, cupra’s fine, smooth fibers reduce static and feel gentle on the skin, providing lasting comfort without the itchiness often associated with wool.
Also Designed for Comfort and Movement
Many winter base layers feel like underwear, warm and stretchy, but not always something you want to wear on its own. With Drought Thermo, we aimed for a clean, versatile look that works from forest ascents to alpine routes, without sacrificing warmth or mobility.
The top features a simple pattern designed for natural movement. Underarm gussets keep the hem from riding up, while flat seams prevent chafing under pack straps or harnesses. A concealed chest pocket on the zip-neck model offers a handy spot for small essentials like your phone during hikes or nights in the tent.
The tights follow the same philosophy, using flat seams and a comfortable fit for unrestricted motion through long climbs and layering.
Every cut and stitch was refined to ensure Drought Thermo feels as good as it performs, warm, non-restrictive, and ready for the mountain.
Even Warmer When Paired with the Elemental Layer
While Drought Thermo is one of the fastest-drying base layers on the market, it still takes a little time to dry completely after heavy sweating. That’s where the Elemental Layer makes a difference.
Worn directly against the skin, the Elemental Layer acts as a barrier between your body and the damp base layer. It keeps your skin dry, preventing heat loss during the drying process.
The combination of Drought Thermo and the Elemental Layer gives you both warmth and reliable sweat management, so you can move with confidence in any winter condition without worrying about getting chilled.
