We Broke the No-Cotton Rule. Here's Why It Was Worth It.

Behind the Development of the Japanese Heritage Color Concealed Mesh Shirt

The Appeal and Challenge of Cotton

"Never wear cotton on the mountain." It's a rule most outdoor enthusiasts know well. The reason is simple: cotton takes a long time to dry. Its high water absorption makes it much slower to dry than synthetic fibers like polyester, and a wet shirt against your skin in the wind can quickly pull heat away from your body.

And yet cotton is one of the most familiar and beloved fabrics in our daily lives. T-shirts, towels, bed sheets. There's a reason we keep coming back to it.

Moisture regulation, comfort, durability, warmth in winter and coolness in summer. These are the qualities that make cotton so comfortable. We wanted to keep all of that while solving the one problem that keeps cotton off the trail. That was the starting point for the Concealed Mesh Shirt, according to Tanaka, Finetrack's fabric development leader.

We asked her to tell us more.

Isn't a high-performance synthetic shirt good enough?

"It certainly would be. But the comfort of cotton is something that's hard to replace. There's a familiarity and comfort to it that synthetics just don't quite replicate. The soft touch comes from its natural elasticity and the rounded ends of the fibers. And actually, cotton's moisture absorption and breathability are qualities that translate surprisingly well to outdoor use."

A Special Fabric Construction That Solves the Problem

So drying speed is still the main challenge. How did you address it?

"The approach we took was to make the inner face of the fabric polyester and the outer face cotton. Polyester is naturally fast drying, but we took it a step further by making the polyester layer a mesh hybrid. That point contact structure increases the surface area available for moisture to spread and evaporate, which speeds up drying significantly. It also means the fabric is less likely to cling to your skin, reducing that uncomfortable sticky feeling."

The outer face uses a pique knit structure, the same weave commonly seen in polo shirts, knitted using a warp knitting method that gives the fabric a crisp, shirt-like body and strength.

So the inner face is polyester mesh, and the outer face is cotton pique. Two different materials and structures in a single piece of fabric. That hidden inner construction is exactly what the name "Concealed Mesh" refers to.

Up close, the different structures on each side become much clearer. Left is the outer face, right is the inner face.

Is it two layers bonded together?

"No, it's a single piece of fabric engineered to have different structures on each side. That's what makes it so technically interesting. It required very close collaboration between our fabric supplier and knitting mill, and their expertise made it possible."

Built for the Outdoors, Refined for Everyday Life

Through rounds of prototyping and fine-tuning the yarn and knit structure, the final fabric came together with the following qualities:

  • The stretch of knit construction
  • Natural odor resistance from the cotton
  • Reduced skin cling from the mesh texture
  • Fast drying from the polyester mesh layer

As a bonus, because cotton and polyester absorb dye differently, the fabric takes on a subtle heathered appearance that gives the finished shirt a refined, polished look.

"We joked with our fabric supplier that if we sold this fabric beyond a niche outdoor brand like Finetrack, it could end up in high-end select shops and make a lot more sales," Tanaka says. "That's how good it turned out."

The result is a shirt that performs in the outdoors and looks equally at home in everyday life. If you get the chance to see it in person, we encourage you to feel the difference between the inner and outer faces for yourself. And if you wear it out on the trail, we think you'll feel why it was worth the effort.
